Overview
In the context of The Oud Tutor, we distinguish between 2 aspects
of note display: static note display and dynamic note display.
Static Note display:
This pertains to how notes are displayed on the oud when
no music is being played. If a maqam is selected, the displayed
notes statically show the maqam notes and their fingering positions
on the oud. When no maqam is selected, they show fingering positions
at 1/2 note intervals.
Static notes are shown as either small gray circles, or little
boxes with the note names (and possible accidentals) inside. In the
latter case, the user can choose between English note names (C, D,
E, F, ...) and French note names (Do, Re, Mi, ...).
Dynamic note display:
This pertains to how notes are
displayed and animated on the oud to show the fingerings
corresponding to the played music. Dynamic notes are shown as either
highlighted little boxes with note names inside, or colored circles.
In the latter case, the color of a circle corresponds to the finger
used to stop the string, as shown in the following figure.

The symbol
on a string means that the string is to be picked without fingering.
Out-of-Range Notes
When playing a music file, it might happen that some notes are
outside the tuning range of the oud. To indicate that, The Oud Tutor
flashes one of the marks
or
at a proper
corner of the oud image.
Using the Note Display Options
The Note Names panel lets the user choose between English and
French note names. The panel also has the "More Options" button,
which brings a window where the user can set all the note display
options.
